EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment — a fixed payment made every month that combines both principal repayment and interest, structured so the loan is fully paid off by the end of the agreed tenure. The calculator uses the standard amortization formula: EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N − 1], where P is the principal (the amount borrowed), R is the monthly interest rate (your annual rate divided by 12 and by 100 to convert from a percentage), and N is the total number of monthly installments. This formula is the same one used across most fixed-rate consumer lending — home loans, car loans, personal loans — anywhere payments are meant to stay level throughout the loan term.
What makes EMI different from simply dividing the loan amount by the number of months is that interest is charged on the outstanding balance, which shrinks over time as you pay it down. In the early months of a loan, a larger share of your fixed EMI goes toward interest because the outstanding principal is still high; in later months, more of the same payment goes toward principal because less interest accrues on a smaller remaining balance. The calculator's breakdown of total interest versus total principal over the full tenure reflects this — it's computed by summing the interest portion of every monthly installment, not by applying a flat interest rate to the original amount.
Tenure and interest rate interact in a way that's easy to underestimate: stretching a loan from 5 years to 10 years at the same rate lowers the monthly EMI, but because interest keeps accruing on the outstanding balance for twice as long, the total interest paid over the life of the loan increases substantially. There's no universally "right" tradeoff — it depends on what monthly payment fits your budget versus how much total cost you're comfortable taking on.
