Watermarking works by compositing — drawing a second layer of content (your text) on top of the first (your photo) within the same canvas, then flattening both into one final image. The browser first draws your source image onto the canvas at full size, then switches to drawing your watermark text on top using the canvas's text-rendering functions, with the fill color's alpha channel set to your chosen opacity. Because the canvas is a single flat pixel grid once rendering is done, there's no way to separate the watermark back out afterward — it's not a layer sitting above the photo, it is the photo, pixel for pixel.
Position and opacity are the two levers that matter most, and they trade off against each other depending on your goal. A watermark meant purely as attribution — a small photographer credit, for example — usually sits in a corner at 30–40% opacity, unobtrusive but legible. A watermark meant to actively deter theft needs to be harder to remove: placing it across the center of the image, or tiling it repeatedly at a lower opacity across the whole frame, forces anyone who wants to crop or clone-stamp it out to damage meaningful parts of the photo in the process. It's worth distinguishing a visible watermark from invisible copyright metadata. Lossy compression optimizes pixel data based on what's actually there, and running it before the watermark exists means a second compression pass later has to work around fresh, sharp-edged text it wasn't accounting for the first time — which can make watermark edges look blocky.
