How the Passport Photo Maker Works

Passport and visa photos aren't just resized images — they follow fixed specifications set by each country's issuing authority: exact physical dimensions (like 35×45mm or the USA's 2×2 inch requirement), a minimum print resolution (typically 300 DPI), and often a specific background color. This tool encodes those specs as presets. When you pick a country, it crops and resizes your uploaded photo to the correct pixel dimensions for that physical size at the required DPI, so the output prints at the correct real-world size rather than an arbitrary pixel count that happens to look right on screen.

Background compliance is handled separately from cropping. Many passport photos are rejected purely because the background isn't plain or isn't the required color — a cluttered room, a shadow, or a slightly off-white wall. This tool replaces the background with a flat, compliant color (white, blue, light gray, transparent, or a custom hex value) using edge detection against your uploaded photo, which works best when the original photo already has a reasonably plain, evenly lit backdrop to begin with. Brightness and contrast controls let you correct for photos taken in dim or harsh lighting before the background swap, since accurate detection depends on a clear boundary between subject and background.

This tool differs from general resizing or cropping in that it's constrained by real-world compliance rules rather than arbitrary dimensions. If you just need to crop a photo to a custom aspect ratio with no fixed spec, the Crop Image tool gives you full freeform control. If your country or document type isn't in the preset list, you can still enter a custom size in millimeters, centimeters, inches, or pixels and the same DPI-aware resizing logic applies.
