Cropping is fundamentally different from resizing, even though both change what an image looks like. When you crop, the tool draws only the pixels inside your selected rectangle onto a new canvas, using the crop box's x and y offset and width and height as the source coordinates for the canvas drawImage()call. No pixel values are recalculated or blended — each retained pixel is copied exactly as it existed in the original. That's why a cropped image never looks softer or different in sharpness than the source; it's a straight extraction, not a transformation. Resizing, by contrast, has to invent or discard pixel values to fit new dimensions, which is why resizing up can introduce blur that cropping never will.
The aspect ratio presets exist because most destinations for a cropped photo have a specific shape requirement. Profile photos on most platforms are square (1:1). Video thumbnails and widescreen banners are 16:9. Classic photo prints and some product listings use 4:3 or 3:2. Locking the crop box to one of these ratios means every resize of the box maintains that shape automatically, so you can focus on positioning rather than doing math. Free-form cropping removes that constraint entirely, useful when you're isolating an irregular object or trimming a scanned document down to its content.
Cropping and resizing are complementary, and it's common to need both — crop to select the right content, then resize to hit an exact pixel dimension a platform requires. One limitation to keep in mind: cropping can only remove pixels, never add them. If your subject is positioned near the edge of a low-resolution photo and you crop tightly around it, you're left with however many pixels were originally in that area — cropping can't sharpen or add detail that wasn't captured in the original shot. For best results, crop from the highest-resolution version of an image you have available, and keep the uncropped original in case you need a different selection later.
